The Twin Town Challenge is back for the Spring Bank Holiday weekend 25-28 May 2018 and Shawcity are delighted to announce their sponsorship of all of the Safety, Health and Environmental aspects of the event.
A fundraising car rally from Oxfordshire to France and back, the challenge involves 100 teams buying a £500 car and taking on a series of challenges en route from Witney, Oxfordshire to its twin town Le Touquet, northern France and back again. The event will start from the grounds of the stunning Blenheim Palace.
The long weekend of adventure raises valuable funds for Oxfordshire-based charity Special Effect, who work with disabled children and adults by supplying technology such as eye-controls and customised joysticks and pads to enable them to play, learn, work and enjoy life.
Logistics, unsurprisingly, are complex with up to 100 vehicles, 400 competitors and a team of 100 marshals and organisers involved. In addition, participants have the opportunity to take their cars round professional race circuits. Health and safety is one of the paramount considerations throughout and, as the event has continued to grow, Shawcity were keen to increase their support for 2018.
Neil O’Regan, Managing Director at Shawcity and SpecialEffect ambassador commented: ‘This is a unique event. We have entered a team and sponsored the two previous challenges in 2016 and 2014, which have raised over £400,000 for SpecialEffect. It became clear the Safety, Health and Environmental aspects needed specific support to ensure the event remains safe and fun for everyone involved while freeing up more of the running costs to go directly to the charity.
‘Health, safety and environmental issues are at the very core of our business, so it is the perfect fit for Shawcity. These funds will allow the Twin Town team to continue with their first class organisation of the event and keep everyone safe and well. When the organisers discussed the opportunity with us, we didn’t hesitate to say yes.’
Paul Cross from STL Communications, who is responsible for all aspects of Safety, Health and Environmental issues during the Twin Town event, said: ‘Safety is our number one priority during the event. We have a duty of care to participants, organisers and the general public which we take very seriously.
‘We have a variety of risks to assess and manage and safety briefings to deliver, including mechanics to handle any potential vehicle breakdowns, marshalling the movement of a large number of vehicles, ensuring we are compliant with both UK and French road laws and, of course, challenges held on race circuits, so we have to be very well prepared.
‘To have a dedicated sponsor for the Safety, Health and Environmental aspects really helps to maximise the funds raised for SpecialEffect. Shawcity have been an ardent supporter of the event since its inception and we’re delighted they have increased their support year-on-year.’
